The King of Pentacles reversed is authority without wisdom — the material mastery that has become an end in itself rather than a means of genuine service. Greed, hoarding, and the confusing of net worth with self-worth are the shadows of this card, as is the tendency to use financial power to control rather than to provide. There can also be financial recklessness here — the King who has grown so comfortable with his resources that he has become cavalier about them, or so obsessed with accumulating more that he has lost the judgment that made the accumulation possible. Stubbornness and an inability to be advised, corrected, or challenged are also signatures of this reversal. The reversed King is being asked to examine what his wealth actually means to him, whether he is using his power in ways he would be proud of, and whether his definition of security has become indistinguishable from a need to control. The throne is still his — but the question is what kind of king he intends to be.
